Last night’s Fireside Chat may have been my favorite yet, because after Lionsgate themselves endorsed us, the studio announced the casting of Cinna, Katniss’ stylist, during our show. Soon I’ll be posting the episode highlights so you can hear our flabbergasted reactions on the air, but first: Lenny Kravitz will play Cinna.
He’s certainly an unexpected choice, mostly because the 46-year-old musician/actor is much older than the character described in the books as a young man just starting out in the fashion industry. Further, his tattoos and piercings seem to go against the much simpler look that Cinna cultivates. But just as the Entertainment Weekly cover proved that the blond Jennifer Lawrence could look like a lean, tanned brunette, we believe that Kravitz can easily look the part.
In fact, you need look no further than his role in Precious (see above), another Lionsgate film. In his role as Nurse John, Kravitz covered all the bases for Cinna: A simple-looking guy who is sort of a nonsexual mentor to a troubled young woman. Director Gary Ross said it was this role that cemented Kravitz for him:
“When I saw Lenny’s work in Precious I was just knocked out. It was quiet and strong and understated and open hearted; all qualities which define this character. I’m really looking forward to this ride.”
And you know who else from the production keeps up with our show? Dayo Okeniyi (Thresh) and Jackie Emerson (Foxface), who commented along on Twitter during the show:
