Nerd News: ‘The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet’ Has the Best Zombie Cast Ever

Personally, I’m tickled enough by the idea of a period zombie comedy called The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet, but it gets even better when you add in the cast: Dame Judi Dench is the most recent addition, joining Sir Ian McKellen, Gillian Anderson, and Mark Williams. You guys! M, Gandalf, Scully, and Arthur Weasley are all going to be in the same movie! And that movie is about ZOMBIES! It really doesn’t get much better than that!

I suppose at this juncture that it would be a good idea to explain exactly what The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet is. Very well: At last year’s Cannes Film Festival, director Matthew Butler, along with his co-writer Tori Hart, debuted a short film that went by the delightful title of E’gad, Zombies!. Narrated by Ian McKellen, the film detailed the unfortunate adventures of young William Filthe. The younger son of an aristocratic family living in Upper Trollop in the 18th century, William had little to hope for in life; he spent his days writing ridiculous poetry and dodging the vegetables thrown at him by Vanity Banks, his one true love. When Vanity decided to marry William’s older brother (who, naturally, is heir to the family fortune), the heartbroken William determined to leave England and live as a monk. Unfortunately, on the morning he was due to leave, William found his house curiously deserted and his faithful servant Sandwich half-eaten. And the worst, as they say, was yet to come as he attempted to save Vanity from an undead fate…

E’gad, Zombies! ran a short and sweet 21 minutes, but left its audiences wanting a whole lot more. So what’s a filmmaker to do? Take what you’ve got, flesh it out and build a feature-length film out of it, of course! The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet will be that feature-length film, expanding the story of E’gad, Zombies! and featuring an all-star cast. The Mary Sue speculates that if Strumpet is to be a direct adaptation of the original short film, then it’s likely that Williams will be playing William Filthe and Gillian Anderson will be playing Vanity Banks; the Mary Sue also suspects that McKellen McKellen will be playing zombie survivor Lord Fortitude. No one is really sure whether Dame Judi will be playing the titular buxom strumpet, but that information will undoubtedly come with time. In the meantime, I don’t know about you, Gentle Readers, but I’m rather excited for this one. Shooting starts later in the year, so stay tuned for more news as it comes!

And now, for your viewing pleasure, the trailer for E’gad, Zombies!:
