Crushable Quotable: Lady Gaga Thinks Alexander McQueen “Planned” Suicide, Wrote “Born This Way” Through Her

For the most part I respect the kookiness of Lady Gaga‘s aesthetic, because it’s clear that she’s operating according to some sort of plan. But as for who’s behind that plan? I was not expecting what she told Harper’s Bazaar: That Alexander McQueen, Gaga’s fashion patron who killed himself over a year ago, has been working through her. She said:

“I think he planned the whole thing: Right after he died, I wrote ‘Born This Way.’ I think he’s up in heaven with fashion strings in his hands, marionetting away, planning this whole thing.”

Maybe it was just the way it was phrased, but it sounds as if Gaga is saying that McQueen planned his death; and considering that it was suicide, that’s really out of line to say, even metaphorically. If anything, it’s pretentious; as close as Gaga and McQueen were, it’s unlikely that she or anyone understood the extent of his pain. To try and rationalize that to her career makes no sense. To pay tribute to him would be a lovely honor, but that’s not what seems to be going on here.
