Screenwriter Deborah Moggach, who penned the Kiera Knightley version of Pride and Prejudice, has an interesting interview on Picktainment.com. She basically says that both Jane Bennet and Mr. Bingley are not that smart, Wickham didn’t get enough scenes, and that actor Tom Hollander (who played Mr. Collins) ad-libbed one of his lines, making it into an anachronism. “I don’t think that worked, really. I also didn’t write the part in Mr. Collins’ sermon, when he says ‘intercourse.’ I believe that was Tom Hollander who did that. I don’t think he should have done it, but I forgive him, because he gave such a good performance.”
So that’s the trick, actors – if you’re going to make something up, make sure you’re a good enough performer to cover it up. And being majorly cute probably doesn’t hurt either.
