Judith Regan was fired from her post as the head of the ReganBooks imprint for HarperCollins, as a result of a telephone rant, in which she allegedly fired off a bunch of anti-Semitic remarks. She reported accused the company of having a "Jewish cabal" against her and said that Jews “should know about ganging up, finding common enemies and telling the big lie.” But, Ms. Regan did let Patti Stanger set her up on 'The Millionaire Matchmaker,' so maybe she's come around.
Sheen's show, Two and a Half Men, was pulled from the air indefinitely, as a result of Charlie's substance abuse and personal issues. He is being accused of borderline anti-Semitism because he referred to the show's producer, Chuck Lorre, as "Chaim Levine." Chaim is a Hebrew name but it is not Chuck's - his original name was Charles Michael Levine.
I know, right? I was surprised, too. Apparently, Halle appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno back in 2007, she was remarking on a bunch of different distorted pictures of herself. When she came to one in which her nose was enlarged, she joked, "Here's where I look like my Jewish cousin!" When asked about her comment, Halle said, "What happened was I was backstage before the show and I have three girls who are Jewish who work for me. We were going through pictures to see which ones looked silly, and one of my Jewish friends said [of the big-nose picture], 'That could be your Jewish cousin!' And I guess it was fresh in my mind, and it just came out of my mouth. But I didn't mean to offend anybody. I didn't. I didn't mean any harm. – and after the show I realized it could be seen as offensive, so I asked Jay to take it out, and he did." The remark was obscured by a laugh track.
During a radio interview in September 2010, CNN show host and reporter Rick Sanchez accused Jon Stewart of being a bigot, because he made fun of Rick on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. When asked whether or not Rick thought that Jon was in a similarly oppressed minority, Rick responded, "Yeah, very powerless people. He's such a minority. I mean, you know, please. What—are you kidding? I'm telling you that everybody who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart. And to imply that somehow they, the people in this country who are Jewish, are an oppressed minority?" Rick later apologized for being "inartful" but was promptly fired from CNN.
This British musician offended many when he chose to sing the first lyric of the German national anthem, "Deutschland Uber Alles," at a performance in Germany. Apparently, in Germany, the song is taboo because of its Nazi associations. The modern version of the national anthem only uses the third lyric of the original song. The audience reacted to his use of the first line with middle fingers and booing.
'Real Housewives of New Jersey' viewers got a huge jolt when Gia Giudice, star Teresa Giudice's oldest daughter, made an apparently anti-Semitic remark on the first episode of season 2. To her credit, Teresa was saying how she had heard that Jewish men make good husbands, and that Gia should considering marrying one. Gia, who was 9 years old at the time, saying she would never want to marry a Jewish person, and mocked the Hasidic Jews' long, curly hair with a look of disgust in her face. The Giudice family drew strong criticism for Gia's opinion of the Jews. Teresa responded to criticism by saying, "I can’t control what my daughter says. Kids say dumb things … what, am I going to be crucified for it?" Probably a poor choice of words, especially given that the Giudice family has already been accused of homophobia, given husband Joe's negative use of the word "gay" in the first season.
I had to add this one today because it just happened (unfortunately). Reportedly, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange said that he believes that there is a cabal of Jewish reporters out there and that they're all little girls, perhaps even "homos." Julian said that there was a conspiracy among reporters, led by the Guardian, and named names, including one that was not Jewish. When this was pointed out to him, he said, "Forget the Jewish thing." Brilliant.
