It has been a great year for Benedict Cumberbatch, the charming and quintessentially English 34 year old thespian. This suave, sophisticated gentleman with piercing blue eyes and crisp accent to boot is destined for big things, having notched up a series of award-winning projects over the past few years. His illustrious CV only seems to be expanding, with work spanning the world of film, theatre and television.
A seasoned actor starring in high profile TV dramas such as Heartbeat, Spooks, Tipping the Velvet and Silent Witness, it was his critically acclaimed performance in Hawking in 2004 which really put him on the radar of film and TV producers. His poignant powerhouse depiction of Stephen Hawking earned him the Golden Nymph TV Film Award for Best Actor, in addition to a nomination for the eminent BAFTA TV Award. His crowning glory however, has to be his portrayal of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective, Sherlock Holmes which aired earlier this year. Dragging the brilliant detective into the twenty first century in this big budget BBC production was an astute move that proved highly popular and cemented Benedict’s pin-up status. His haughty yet affable persona (oxymoronic I know, but oh so true) has also struck a chord with the British male population. Since sporting the beautiful Belstaff three-quarter coat (aka The Milford) on the sets of Sherlock, there has been a never-ending waiting list for the coat, catapulting Benedict to trend-setter status. Such is the popularity of Benedict’s Sherlock (drama and trendy coat too) that a second series has already been commissioned.
Next year looks über promising on the film front too. With a clutch of hit films already under his belt (Amazing Grace, The Other Boleyn Sister and Atonement to name but a few), Benedict is also starring in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. With the hallmarks of a superstar-in-waiting, it won’t be long before Benedict is as popular overseas as he is here in the UK. Expect to see more of this handsome hunk (I anticipate in particular, seeing more of Benedict’s gorgeously aloof detective next year).
