‘Harry Potter’ Vs. ‘Twilight’: The Ultimate Crushable Poll

To an alien race, J.K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter books and Stephanie MeyersTwilight Saga may seem to be more similar than different: both are children’s series that have developed a weird adult cult, both have become giant movie franchises, and both are drawing out their final chapters into two seperate films.

But as millions around the world know, the real question isn’t Team Jacob or Team Edward, it’s Twilight versus Harry Potter. And today Crushable nearly imploded when we found out that two of our staff were mortal foes when it came to choosing sides. Read our point/counterpoint and then vote in our Harry Potter/Twilight poll to determine, once and for all, the superior series.

The Team Harry Argument by Liana Maeby:

When I found out that Drew is an unapologetic member of Team Twilight I was shocked. Appalled! I mean, the winner here is just so obvious. Harry Potter offers a brilliantly original universe with characters and inventions (Hagrid! Quidditch!) unlike anything else. As for Twilight? Stephanie Meyers franchise is nothing but the same old recycled vamp story, dressed up in eyeliner and a little blood.

Then there’s the issues of theme. The fantasies of Harry Potter are positive and enlightened: the triumph of good over evil coupled with a little youthful mischief. But the fantasies of Twilight are all about sacrifice and seriousness — not to mention the theme of not having sex your weirdly glistening undead boyfriend. Bella is lame and Hermione is cool. I mean, she may not be “cool” cool, but she’s smart and funny and real. While Bella is a cautionary tale, a woman who sacrifices herself for the kind of “love” that seems pretty terrible to me.

Look: Maybe — just maybe — I’d rather be ravished in the back of a dark bar by Twilight and never know his full name, but Harry Potter is who I want to come home to every night. Please, folks. Be on the right side of history here.

P.S. Enjoy no longer being on the Best-Seller list, Twilight!

Sorry! This poll is now closed.

My brother (who is totally not a reader of novels) could not understand such comparison… Seriously… I’d rather you compete Harry Potter with Lord of the Rings since they’re at par in terms of being great books (though I did not have much patience on reading LOTR for some reason lol but liked them nonetheless)… I also like Twilight, it was fun to read only if you want to imagine yourself being a damsel in distress… And the only likable character for me is Alice Cullen… Peace! :)

  • Mia

LOL The poll pwned the poster’s ass.

  • Jennifer

Wat r u people talking about they r both so good idk which ones better and they shouldnt be compared because they’re are not even the same genre harry potter is wizards and witches and twilight is vampires probably the only reason that they r being compared is because (freaking hot btw) robert pattinson is in both (well was in hp) and i love all the characters in both but i think i like twilight more wat can i say im a sucker for romances and vampires and hot guys soooo i think u get the point im not dissing hp or anything cause i love it i have all the hp books including an hp cook book and the tales of beetle the bard and i only 1 twilight book but ive read breaking dawn like 4 times already so if i HAD to pick which is best i would pick twilight because stephanie comes up with different things for her characters in each book and j.k. just comes up with another way for harry to defeat volamort in each book so

P.S. i love robert pattinson and taylor lautner

Jennifer, I’m like 80% convinced you’re a troll, but just in case you’re not:

Are you kidding me? I was gonna post a coherent response, but all I can say right now is “BEETLE THE BARD?”

    • Karina

      what an earth is ‘volamort’
Also I am much more interested in the development of Harry V Voldemort than the twilight series … massive spoiler if you haven’t read it – most unsatisfactory pointless ending ever – no epic battles, no massive twists – all that happens is bella’s power is a shield? It just does not compare to character developments in HP for example Snape.

    • L.O.L

a new thing for her character in each book? L.O.L bella absolutely doesn’t change throughout all movies, and edward i do believe he did not change in 100 years… bella has been this pathetic girl supposedly in love with this vampire and who wanted to be immortal and live with him for all eternity since first movie. movie n°3 : she’s still there. no change.. they try to make us believe that she might have a change of heart but it is so OBVIOUS that she wouldn’t! she’s just obsessed, i find her rather pathetic! thanks for girl empowering… and edward may be this gentleman from another era, but it’s sad to think that he’s already lived for a century and is gonna live forever without evolving. He seems stuck in 1920! Sad…

At least in HP the characters have more dimensions, they do have real flaws. Like human beings not like two-dimensional characters. And you need to re-read HP, if you think that it’s all about killing Voldemort you haven’t understood a single thing. It’s about never abandoning even when evil seems to have won ’cause evil hasn’t won as long as there are people resisting. Harry and his friends could have just decided to go abroad but they did not. It’s about longlife friendship. About family, the one you’re born in and the one you choose. About love, not vulgar passion like in Twilight, I’m talking about true love.

PS : But I love Carlisle! lol

Harry Potter is so much better than Twilight, it shouldn’t even have to be compared.
First up is the issue of the ‘hotter male characters in Twilight’.
Okay, so some people say Twilight’s actors are hotter. Harry Potter started casting 10 YEARS AGO!! When you’re eleven years old, you are not chosen by how HOT you are!! Plus, I think the actors have grown up quite nicely.

Another issue is the entire Bella-Hermione thing. Bella is a whiny brat, always depending on a guy to save her. Hermione, even when Ron left her and Harry, she continued to destroy Horcruxes so that Voldemort could be killed. When Edward left Bella, she jumped off a cliff, and went numb for months.

Bella is portrayed as a ‘normal girl’ and has a sparkly ‘hot’ vampire fall in love with her. Really, that’s pathetic. Saying that being clumsy is not a flaw. Anyone can be clumsy. Everybody is constantly trying to protect her all because she whines about missing Edward and is constantly being saved by a guy.

Another example–when Harry broke up with Ginny to protect her, she fought at the Battle of Hogwarts even though she was underage, and missed death by an inch. When Edward broke up with Bella to protect her, she risked her own life just to hear his voice. How miserably pathetic is that?

Harry Potter is an amazing story about friendship, family, and courage. You watch the characters grow up and develop their own characteristics and fight for what they care for. Twilight is about a silly whiny girl who is constantly being saved by a man. Now, can I hear a ‘sexist’?

Harry Potter is better than Twilight and you know it.

    “Nuff said.

    • Bethany

you’ve said everything that needs saying. it baffles me that people compare a series like Harry Potter with something like Twilight which honestly reads as a bad fanfiction. Bella should be no one’s role model.

  • Starrchild Lemon

It’s impossible to name a single thing of worth in the Twilight series.

Harry Potter, on the other hand, is an amazingly written series with well-developed characters and an intricate plot, as well as a hundred important messages to teach people and make them better.

This whole poll is a joke, but it’s still kind of fun to see Twilight thrashed like that XD

    • Eefa

hahahaha i died of laughter when i saw the polls result :P

    • Eefa

hahaha i died of laughter when i saw the poll’s results :P It’s just preposterous when people compare Twilight with something as EPIC AND AWESOME as Harry Potter -_- It’s just plain hilarious =D

  • Pia

Hi, I’m not a fan of both series but I think this is probably the most poorly written article I’ve ever read. Now, I’m starting to get an idea of what I’ll get if I read Twilight, probably nothing but the will not to have sex until I turn into a vampire.

  • Pothead

I’ve read both series and watched both series (As many as Twilight has out) and I have to say, Harry Potter is better than Twilight by miles.
Twilight is good (The books are good, the movies are terrible) but it just doesn’t have the same feeling as Harry Potter gave me, and can’t really be compared.
Harry Potter’s actors were chosen for their acting abilities, and I think Twilight actors were mainly picked because of what they look like… Kristen Stewart is a rubbish actress in my opinion.

  • Jasmijn

Ok, you’re only talking about how better looking everyone in Twilight is than in Harry Potter? Well, we know that, and the serie isn’t about that! Robert Pattinson was in a Harry Potter Movie too, btw. I’ve been huge fans of both. When i was 11/12 of Harry Potter and when i was 13 of Twilight. I am 14 now and really don’t understand why i was so obsessed by Twilight. Edward is a pussy and Bella is just annoying. I liked the first book/movie when Edward was mysterious and cool and all, but after that he just went downhill. Sure it’s a very sweet story and i like watching the movies because Robert Pattinson is very handsome, but Harry Potter has become this big without handsome actors and selling sex (as some adults call it) to teenagers. I’ve spend 10 years on Harry Potter and still can’t believe its over! I remember when i was 4 and i was in a dvd store to buy Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone. It’s has been a big part of my life and it probably is a big part of other people there lives too. It has a story, a fantasy and a influence that Twilight will never have. O, and Twilight hardly has male fans. Harry Potter is for everyone. And if you like cool vampires and werewolfs you should really find another serie, because Edward and Jacob certainly aren’t cool. Go look at TVD or TB, because those are much better that Twilight.

  • Haha!

I do feel sorry for you. I mean really, only 1.6% agrees with you. Poor, poor you. *chuckles with amusement*

  • Joanna Freeaking Potter

Well, I’ve personally never read Twilight- But my sister has told me quite alot about it. She makes it sound all amazing and fantastic, but I think its a load of bs. Plus when I saw the second movie? Im not even sure- the one where Jacob takes his shirt off. It was weird. I mean, her boyfriend ditched her in a forest, she almost gets raped by an asshole, she almost dies how many freaking times, and just stays in her room. The only good parts- Taylor’s abs and the dude behind me screaming stuff.
Whereas Harry Potter really intranced me. He entered my life when I was nine and he will never leave my heart. Day after day, I hope for more Harry Potter.
So, I know people are going to spam me for just judging Twilight without actually reading it but, I think I’ve heard as much as I want. So, Harry Potter will have a place in my heart forever.

  • CJ

I have to agree wholeheartedly and entirely with a quote from Stephen King: “Harry Potter is about confronting fears, finding inner strength and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.”
I have tried to read the Twilight series just to see what all the pumped up hype is about, and could get passed the first three words; it was like I could feel my brain melting. With Harry Potter, I just keep going back and reading the series over and over and over again and it still makes me laugh, gasp, cry, get excited, and get surprised just like it did when I read it the first time.
I also laughed hysterically when I saw the poll results. XD

  • RemusL

    OH THE RESULTS.
    Harry Potter.
    Just…Harry Potter.
The series that can make me glow with happiness and be crushed into tears.

  • BeccySuchh

Drew Grant, how much of a wanker are you. Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are hot does not make the BOOKS a better series. Please, how gay are you?

‘At least Bella isn’t a prissy little know it all’ HA! Hermione actually wants to do well at school and have a good career whereas Bella just wants to be as perfect and beautiful as Edward. How riveting.

Bella is awful and one-dimensional, I can’t relate to her because I’m not a selfish, lazy, miserable, whining, good-for-nothing inconsiderate brat. This person is supposed to be a role model?

    Let’s compare shall we?

Hermione is caring, consistent, brave, loyal, clever with a big heart who would do anything for her friends. And she actually has flaws! She’s narrow-minded, bossy, insecure and afraid of failure. This is what makes her real. Bella has no flaws whatsoever which makes her boring and flat. Her clumsiness is not a flaw. The way it’s described makes me think that she has a mental illness.

Let’s compare other female charcaters. Have you noticed that not one single female character, with the exception of Bella has a job? Bella’s mother can’t fend for herself, she has to live off her husband. Esme, Emily are the typical perfect Stepford housewives while their spouses are out fighting. Luna Lovegood on the other hand is absolutely nuts but she doesn’t care what other people think of her and she’s confident and self-assured. She may be ‘off with the fairies’ but she’s witty and intelligent in a completely different way to a Hermione. The Twilight girls are just lamps compared to the Harry Potter girls, with the exception of Leah, who is a lava lamp.

I stand by what I say. I don’t give a fuck if Jacob has abs. I don’t care I’d Edward has sexy ankles. At the end of the day, it’s the people that they are that really counts. Oh and may I just add that Edward was going to commit suicide (by sparkling no less) when he thought Bella was dead (he didn’t even bother finding out if this was true. I mean yeah Rosalie who hated Bella in New Moon is completely trustworthy aye? Harry doesn’t commit suicide when Sirius, Fred, Moody, Dumbledore, Tonks, Lupin or Hedwig die. He just goes on. Granted , he wasn’t in love with any of them. But he still loved them.

  • Padfoot

Everyone knows Harry Potter is better, however I always get a little nervous when it comes to these polls, because there are some pretty insane Twilight fans (and that’s understandable, you clearly have to be a raving lunatic to like Twilight). However, when I voted and saw the results, I just laughed. Harry Potter, end of story.

  • Aditya

jk rowling sold out??????????????? she planned the seven books from the start….meyer planned for 2 books and stretched it to 4 and it shows….i liked the 1st one but all other especially the last one is total crap……..

my biggest problem with twilight series(there are many contenders) is that from 2nd book she builds the theme of war….in the 4th it finally starts….no wait it doesn’t….they assemble two armies and meet in a field talk some shit and go away…….what the fuck was that?????

  • Marshiee

Oh please!! How can you compare Twilight with Harry Potter?! Obviously Harry Potter is waaay waaay better than the two lovebirds with the ‘epic’ love story and the damsel in distress thingy.
Stop comparing them!! Twilight can’t even be in the same sentence as.
    As Harry. LOL

  • Proteragon

Lolol the asshole lost, Team Potter ftw <3

  • HARRY POTTER ALL THE WAY

harry potter rules, J.K. Rowling is the only person to become a billionaire by selling books. Haha good luck twilight tying to beat harry potter.BTW we don’t care if you are on team Edward or team Jacob

  • Luna

I can’t believe Drew’s even trying to say that Twilight’s better than Harry Potter. The main argument in this is that the actors (or rather, “actors”- I’m pretty sure Kristen Stewart’s a plank of wood) *aged* better in twilight than in Harry Potter. For one, that is the most shallow piece of bull I’ve ever read- INCLUDING the Twilight series itself. Second, TOM FELTON. MATT LEWIS. THE PHELPS TWINS. “Nuff said about that.

  • qwerty

You are the stupidest person EVER! Twilight is based around a completely abusive, sexist relationship, while Harry Potter is about overcoming evil, facing your fears, bravery, and a million other IMPORTANT and MORAL things. Not about dizzy, fainting, Bella who has no spine (or brain, for that matter), and let’s her boyfriend swoop to her rescue and tell her who she can see and what she can do. On top of that, Edward is a literal Stalker, and Bella and Edward’s relationship qualifies as an abusive relationship according to the National Domestic Violence hotline. For God’s Sake, he watches her sleep! I’m disappointed in any sane human who can’t see this. I realized all of this in the sixth grade, so I hope that whoever is reading this will smarten up a bit and LOOK AT THE FACTS!
