To an alien race, J.K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter books and Stephanie Meyers‘ Twilight Saga may seem to be more similar than different: both are children’s series that have developed a weird adult cult, both have become giant movie franchises, and both are drawing out their final chapters into two seperate films.
But as millions around the world know, the real question isn’t Team Jacob or Team Edward, it’s Twilight versus Harry Potter. And today Crushable nearly imploded when we found out that two of our staff were mortal foes when it came to choosing sides. Read our point/counterpoint and then vote in our Harry Potter/Twilight poll to determine, once and for all, the superior series.
The Team Harry Argument by Liana Maeby:
When I found out that Drew is an unapologetic member of Team Twilight I was shocked. Appalled! I mean, the winner here is just so obvious. Harry Potter offers a brilliantly original universe with characters and inventions (Hagrid! Quidditch!) unlike anything else. As for Twilight? Stephanie Meyer’s franchise is nothing but the same old recycled vamp story, dressed up in eyeliner and a little blood.
Then there’s the issues of theme. The fantasies of Harry Potter are positive and enlightened: the triumph of good over evil coupled with a little youthful mischief. But the fantasies of Twilight are all about sacrifice and seriousness — not to mention the theme of not having sex your weirdly glistening undead boyfriend. Bella is lame and Hermione is cool. I mean, she may not be “cool” cool, but she’s smart and funny and real. While Bella is a cautionary tale, a woman who sacrifices herself for the kind of “love” that seems pretty terrible to me.
Look: Maybe — just maybe — I’d rather be ravished in the back of a dark bar by Twilight and never know his full name, but Harry Potter is who I want to come home to every night. Please, folks. Be on the right side of history here.
P.S. Enjoy no longer being on the Best-Seller list, Twilight!
