Much of this fourth season of Mad Men has been about the burgeoning rebelliousness of Sally Draper, Don’s adorable blonde daughter. Sally’s played by 10-year-old Kiernan Shipka, who infuses the role with a level of sophistication that’s surprising yet entirely believable. Vulture interviewed the precocious cutie about working with Jon Hamm (whom she describes as “a really good guy”) and playing young Sally:
Well, in season one, season two, and beginning of season three, I was like Sally. She was adventurous, free-spirited, and now she’s really … her soul’s really beaten down. She’s in a very difficult position right now, so I don’t think I can relate to her now … but since I know the character so well — I’ve been her, what, four years now? — that I know Sally. I know what she’s feeling.
What an insightful thing for a fifth grader to say! Kiernan seems to really understand her character and it shows on the screen. We sure are glad the actress can’t relate to her beaten-down character.
