Will ‘Boardwalk Empire’s’ Prohibition Chic Overtake ‘Mad Men’ In Fashion Nostalgia?

When Mad Men first premiered, people went gaga for the realistic costume designs of the 1960s ad agency. But now HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, with its alleged $50 million budget, is threatening to overtake the era of dry martinis and JFK by reinstituting the fashion of the 1920s. So we ask: What’s more your style?

• Christina Hendricks‘ tight, red dresses on Mad Men versus Paz De La Huerta‘s flapper-wear.

Winner: Tie (We’ve been Joan fans for so long that it’ll take more than one cute Moulin Rouge-inspired gettup to get us to worship at the alter of the showgirl.)

• Steve Buscemi‘s dapper Nucky Thompson vs. the even dappier Don Draper.

Winner: Draper (Sorry Steve, no one else will ever look as good in a suit as Jon Hamm.)

I vote Boardwalk Empire all around for style. And swagger. Steve Buscemi may not be as polished as Jon Hamm from the neck up. But guy’s a gangster in pinstripes.

After seeing the first episode of Boardwalk Empires frankly, it was
beyond boring. The continual usage of the F word reminded me of ten years olds cursing behind their Mother’s back trying to act grown up.
Mr. Piazza is a terrible choice to play Charley Luciano aka Lucky. His portrayal of Lucky thus far, is nothing even close to Lucky who was not a hothead as the dining room scene depicted.
Charley was a gentleman and a genius. If my Dad was still alive
he would have been shocked over not just the casting of Charley but the interpretation of his personality. My Dad passed in 1981, he was the baby of the boys in the family….born in 1907. Initially our last name was Lucania until Charley changed it to Luciano.
This show is a great disappointment.
    Rest in peace Uncle Charley.

I watched Boardwalk twice as the first episode was so confusing and scattered I thought I must have missed something. It was just as horrid the second time. I can’t believe Scorsese is associated with something so poorly written and badly cast. What a waste of so much creative effort on the part of cast and set-building. I might watch it one more time to see if it improves.
