Sure, she’s got a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination for her breakout role in Precious, as well as a hot new role on The Big C. But Gabourey Sidibe wants you to be certain of one thing: She never wanted to be an actress.
“I thought I would be a receptionist,” admitted the starlet, who’s playing a mean high school girl on the Showtime series about cancer. “I’ve always wanted a normal life, and this is what I got. Being an actress wasn’t a plan at all, and so it’s very strange what’s happened to me.”
Even though she’s rubbing elbows with her Hollywood crush Justin Timberlake nowadays, Gabourey insists that she’s keeping her life pretty much the same as it was before she became a household name.
“I ride the subway. I ride the bus and all of that. I’m very normal,” she declared during an appearance at the Television Critics Association press tour in L.A. (Get more TCA goss here).
Of course, if you happen to run into Gabourey on the street, she won’t freak out if you happen to freak out when you see her.
“I love when I go to a restaurant and I walk past, and everyone is like ‘ohhhhh,’” she shared, hands waving in the air. “That’s always really funny.”
Which is why the 27-year-old actress is imparting this advice about life.
“It just goes to show that whatever plan you have for your life, you are wrong a lot of times.”
The Big C premieres Monday, August 16 at 10:30 p.m. on Showtime.
