Crush This: ‘Entourage’ Returns, Miley Cyrus ‘Can’t Be Tamed’

EntourageWelcome to Crush This, your weekly guide to what’s new in movies, music and TV. We’ve navigated the inner reaches of our entertainment-obsessed brains in search of all the pop culture landscape has to offer. This week, it’s a big one, as HBO series Entourage and Hung return with new seasons, and Miley Cyrus debuts her new sound in her long-awaited album Can’t Be Tamed. And a Tom Cruise action movie!

Movies: Tom Cruise is back, with the action flick/romantic comedy Knight and Day with Cameron Diaz, opening Wednesday. The ever-present ads and Tom’s appearance as his Tropic Thunder doppelganger Les Grossman at the MTV Movie Awards could send this summer film to the top of the box office — but can it push past Toy Story 3‘s monster first weekend? Knight and Day won’t have to worry about any action competitors opening later in the week either, although the buddy comedy Grown Ups, with Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade, Kevin James, Salma Hakey and Rob Schneider, opening Friday, could attract an (older) crowd who just wants to laugh.

TV: It’s nice to have some HBO shows returning to the air. After welcoming back True Blood last week, we’re getting a new season of Entourage (its seventh) starting on Sunday, after Hung. Another returning fav, Futurama hits Comedy Central on Thursday night.

For new shows, My Name Is Earl fans will be happy to see Jason Lee returning to TV on TNT’s Memphis Beat, debuting on Tuesday. He plays an Elvis-loving Memphis cop who solves quirky cases with a rag tag team of offbeat sidekicks. And if cop shows are your bag, you might want to check out Rookie Blue, on ABC starting Thursday, before the documentary series Boston Med, a medical drama/reality show that actually looks pretty gripping.

Music: We’ve been hearing a lot about Miley Cyrus’s new album Can’t Be Tamed, which has been promised to feature an older, more mature, rock-based sound — a departure for the teen pop princess breaking free of her Hannah Montana Disney persona as the show heads towards the end of its final season. It’s a story we’ve heard before. Heck, it’s the plot of Hannah Montana. But will Miley’s fans, who have grown up with her, follow? We’ll find out this week, as the album drops Tuesday.

Also on sale Tuesday: new albums from The Roots, Eminem, Macy Gray and Cyndi Lauper’s Memphis Blues, an album full of blues covers.
