Christy Turlington is our favorite ’90s supermodel and also the wife of former indie-film upstart Ed Burns. Given her outrageous beauty, it’s easy to view her as nothing more than a pretty face: Turns out, we are the superficial ones!
Christy debuted her new documentary No Woman No Cry at this week’s G(irls)20 Summit; the film explores women’s health issues around the world, and was inspired by Christy’s personal experience having complications while giving birth to her daughter. While she was fortunate enough to have access to quality healthcare, other women around the globe are less so. In No Woman No Cry, Christy is shown visiting countries from Tanzania to Guatemala on a mission to raise awareness of maternal health; she is now showing the doc for lawmakers in DC. Lilit Marcus — editor of our sibling site TheGloss — was on hand at the G(irls)20 Summit to witness. In her review of the film, Lilit had mixed feelings: “Raising awareness is a huge, important first step – but I want to know what happens after the awareness is raised, and I want to know what Turlington hopes those lawmakers who watch her film should do next.” Now that Christy’s got our attention, she’s got to walk the walk.
