Remember that best friend you had since you were five, who turned into your worst enemy once you guys hit high school and found out you liked the same guy? It’s a story as old as time, or at least the plot of tons of teen movies, and the most recent real-life examples may be none other than Disney princesses Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato.
For those who don’t follow tween culture obsessively, the two met while working on Barney (Barney!) and quickly became the Paris and Nicole (or LC and Heidi, or Lindsay Lohan and whomever) of the purity-ring scene. They dated the Jonas Brothers, had flame wars with Miley Cyrus‘ crew, and even made a Disney TV movie together last June (Princess Protection Program).
But then something weird started happening. The love between Selena and Demi faded fast, with Demi bashing Selena publicly to the media (most recently to Girls’ Life magazine, saying: “We’re both busy, and I wish the best for her. True friends don’t let their friends or family be mean to you. If you can’t trust somebody, you can’t be friends with them.”)
Oh, snap! So what the heck happened?
