Even though the CNN interview between Christiane Armanpour and Angelina Jolie is only going to air on television on Sunday, the full interview is actually available online now.
Here’s part one:
And here is part two:
I especially like that Christiane and Angelina discuss the need for long-term strategies for recovery in Haiti as opposed to the immediacy of a “band-aid”. This is the biggest problem with disaster situations. As long as it’s relatively new and in the news, people are aware and care about what’s going on. Then as it starts to take a back burner to newer stories, help dwindles, which is why we need people like Angelina, why we need these organizations like the UNHCR and Doctors Without Borders, so that we can keep the focus there.
I also find that sometimes people just get – for lack of a better word – tired of hearing about a bad situation. What a luxury it is for us to be able to say, “enough of this!” and turn the television off. I love that Angelina will try to help keep the focus on Haiti in the same way that she has done for places like Darfur, Iraq, Afghanistan, and others.
We discussed the shorter clips quite a bit yesterday; I’d love to hear your thoughts after watching the full CNN interview with Angelina Jolie.
