In ‘Red Light on the Wedding Night‘, Luke delivers his wedding present for Lorelai & Max: a chuppah that he made for them. He says simply that he “had some time,” though it sounds like it took a lot of time. And it’s after this gift and talk with Luke that Lorelai decides to take a “road trip”… instead of getting married.
Now, I know there is a lot to be said about this chuppah. Why a chuppah? Why something so elaborate? Why something handmade? Was Luke trying to show up Max, who doesn’t even mow lawns? Was he trying to prove something to Lorelai? What does it say about his ideas of marriage?
At one point, Luke says ” I guess if you can find that one person, you know, who’s willing to put up with all your crap, and doesn’t want to change you or dress you or you know, make you eat French food, then marriage can be all right. But that’s only if you find that person.”
So, did Lorelai find that person in Max? And Max in Lorelai? What part does Luke play in this? And what about when Lorelai tried to dress Luke? Then there’s that parting shot of Lorelai & Luke standing together under the chuppah… foreshadowing?
How does the chuppah change Lorelai’s mind?
