Who would have thought that 87-year-old Betty White and 44-year-old Sandra Bullock would have much in common? But the actresses, who are both stepparents, bonded during the filming of The Proposal over their unconventional families.
“[Betty] said, ‘You know what? I never had children biologically. I married someone who had three children. And how blessed I was to have those three stepchildren.’ That’s exactly what happened to me,” Sandra said.
“I went, ‘Wow.’ When everyone is going, ‘You should have a baby now,’ I’m like, ‘I could. Maybe I should. But do I need to?’”
Instead Sandra is embracing her role as stepmom to her husband Jesse James’ three children, 14-year-old Chandler, 11-year-old Jesse James Jr., and 5-year-old Sunny.
Sunny’s mother Janine Lindemulder is serving jail time for failure to pay taxes, so Sandra has stepped up to fill the void. Meanwhile she enjoys a great relationship with the older children’s mom Karla.
“We all parent together,” she says. “It’s beautiful. It’s like synchronized swimming.”
The actress accepts that she “may never hear that word ‘mom,’” but she’s come to terms with the bigger picture.
“Being a parent is not about breeding. It’s about caring,” she explained. “It’s easy to say, but it’s harder to do. But this is the best test of being a parent. And I just have to keep reminding myself I don’t care what I get. I care what I give.”
