Many hipsters are still mourning the “passing” of the free Jelly NYC Pool Parties at McCarren Park Pool in Williamsburg. The free concerts in the empty pool were some of the best parties in the previous summers, with artists like Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, The Breeders, and Spank Rock playing free shows there. Unfortunately, the city decided to turn the pool back into an actual pool (ie fill it with water) so it’s closed for concerts this year while they do renovations and forever after because people will be swimming in it.
What to do? Apparently, the Williamsburg Waterfront will be a new location for concerts, many free by Jelly NYC, this summer. Located along the East River between North Eighth and North Ninth Streets in ana rea that was designated a New York State park a few years ago, the new space can hold up to 6,000 people. So, you ask, who is playing there this summer? Here’s what we know so far:
June 19: Dirty Projectors (it is possible this show will not be free)
July 12: Mission of Burma, Fucked Up, and Ponytail
July 19: Magnolia Electric Co. and The Donkeys
August 2: Dan Deacon, No Age, and Deerhunter. This is part of a tour the three bands are embarking on and should be interesting: “…all three bands will collaborate on a seamless piece of music, with everyone helping out with everyone else’s songs: ‘We’re looking to really kind of meld together the ideas that currently exist in one band’s song, and then augment them, either by having other members play together or adding something new to the song that’ll transition to another song. So you’ll still hear Deerhunter and Dan Deacon and No Age songs, but they’ll be boosted in a way by having other members play in them as well.’” No Age’s Randy Randall told this to Pitchfork. The tour is short, but in addition to the Williamsburg show, they will be playing here–at a pool in New Jersey! I must say, that looks pretty amazing.
Also, according to Brooklynvegan, Grizzly Bear will be playing a free show there some time this summer, but no date is confirmed. More shows should be announced soon so I will keep you posted!
