Angelina Jolie’s column in Time Magazine

Not only did Brad Pitt get a serious nod by appearing on Time’s 100 Most Influential List in the Builders and Titans category, Angelina Jolie wrote a column for the same issue as well. Continuing to demonstrate that she’s not just a pretty (gorgeous) face with a talent for acting, she wrote the article discusses Somaly Mam who – during the uprising of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia – was sold into sexual slavery by a man claiming to be her grandfather.

The story goes on to tell about her daring escape and subsequent return to Cambodia to fight against sexual slavery – and the devastating consequences that brought about.

I am so happy that Angelina Jolie works so hard for human rights and by that brings these stories to our attention. She does so much for so many people and inspires so many of us to do what we can to help as well.

The piece was written to honor Somaly Mam as one of the 100 Most Influential people under the Heroes and Icons category. What a fabulous acknowledgment.

I know there are a lot of wonderful and caring people here at PittWatch who enjoy helping others whenever possible. If you’d like to know more about Somaly Mam and her cause, you can check out her foundation’s website here.

In other news, this local Albany paper says that today was Angelina Jolie’s last day of filming Salt in their downtown area. It sounds like shooting is really motoring along, so here’s hoping that Angelina will be with Brad Pitt in Cannes in a little more than a week!

    Angie is so intelligent.

Angie is really into Human Rights. As a Social Science major here in the Philippines we have discussed human rights and how to implement it and teach it to our future students. Human Rights are innate to us and nobody can ever deprived us from that.

I admired Somaly Mam for her bravery to go back to Cambodia and face her past dusing the Kher Rouge. I also read an article years ago about how many women, young and old, are being sold by their parents to sexual slavery. And to think some are just 5 to 8 years old! To satisfy their costumers their vagina is being stitched everytime a new costumer will arrive. Goodness! I can’t believe people can do that to those innocent children!

I hope sexual slavery will end soon. People like Angie are changing this and continue to inspire us.

God Bless the Angie and her family!

Angelina Jolie is clearly a very, very BLESSED and TALENTED woman. There is know doubt the world has to see this and it really does not matter if women attempt to imitate her looks, or if anyone speaks against her she does the right things. Keep on keeping on, you have an on time ANGEL that’s with you. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, THUMBS UP.

i think it’s really wonderful that Angie is helping Somaly Mam in raising awareness about sexual slavery which is a very inhuman act and a very serious issue. both Somaly and Angie are such an inspiration for every female in the world. and about the fact that our Angie wrote the column, it only proves that she is obviously more than just an award winning actress and a pretty face.

I hope that this article will bring about a huge change in the lives of the young girls and women who are still in bondage to those evil people who profit from this heinous crime! Go, Angie!

I didn’t know anything about Somaly Sam until Angie’s wonderful profile of her in Time, but I have since discovered that she was the first subject of Mariane Pearl’s Global Diary for Glamour magazine. It’s a fascinating article that delves into the sex trafficking situation in Cambodia. Now I’m wondering if Somaly will be one of Mariane’s subjects for the movie or documentary that Angie is producing.
Thanks Sherry for the latest threads. Great review of TCCOBB. Looking forward to the DVD.
And thanks Salmie for the photo of Angie on the bike. Wish we could see more pics of the shoot.

Ms Mam is a very admirable person and I can understand Angie’s admiration.

We all know how dedicated Angie is to human rights. For those who speak so badly about her and Brad, they will never stop, because these people have no idea what it is to kind to others. Thanks Sherry for bringing this to our attention.

Sorry forgot to mention that I hope we will all be able to see the whole Jolie-Pitt family dressed up and on the boat to go over to the Cannes activities. I hope they will have the twins with them and we get to see them. It has been a while since we saw them in Japan.

Smart, beautiful, intelligent and caring about others and the world around her. She is brilliant and the right people are taking notice, I am happy about the Time Mag column it shows her versatility. Yes! it shows a woman can be a mom, be in love and still be who you are, respected and loved. I hope they all go to Cannes.

It makes me sad when I read about how women in some countries are treated. It’s shocking!! Somaly Mam is a very brave woman. I admire her very much.

  • stratoula

To me Angie is a really really TRUE person! She is really trying to help and bring awareness into the world!I remember that a few years ago she said that when she was younger she didn’t know what is really going on in the world. She said that she wants to inform people about the real situation in some countries. And this is what she is doing! And she so smart and intelligent that she always finds a beautiful way to do that, ignoring all the bad stuff that people say about her and focus on what is really important!!!I’m really proud to be her fun!!!

Mary Ann- I’d love that, too. However, I don’t think we will see them on the boat, as we didn’t see any pictures of them on a boat going to Cannes last year (the only boat pictures of them were those ones of Maddox and Pax, taken within days of Angie, Zee, and Shi shopping in Monaco).

Oh, and I feel silly having to ask, but…What exactly do you mean by “in the boat going to Cannes”? Is there a special boat people have to take to get to Cannes or something?

  • Mary Ann

joliepittfanatic, I could be wrong because I forget things very quickly now. One of the hardships of getting old, so I might need help here. But I think I remember one year, and I thought it was last year, all of the Jolie-Pitts on a boat. The girls, Zee and Shi were all dressed up in fancy coats. So if anyone else remembers this please let me know if that was a different occasion.

Mary Ann- I think you might be thinking of summer 2007. The J-Ps were seen on at least three boat trips that summer. One was in Chicago (but they weren’t dressed up, so that probably wasn’t the one you were thinking of) and the other two (one of which was actually a water taxi ride rather than a formal boat ride) were in Italy.

They also went for a boat ride in India in late summer/early fall of 2006. However, Shi, who was only around 4-6 months old at the time, wasn’t with them, so I doubt that’s the one you were thinking of.
