When Ron Carlivati took over in writing for One Life To Live I have to admit, I was very happy. Finally, One Life To Live will rise back up to it’s fabulousness like it was before. For a while there the Soap was at an impasse. I was getting bored with all the stupid storylines. But slowly but surely, Carlivati unleashed his dark, sick, disturbed yet brilliant head on all of us.
First, Nash’s death. For storyline purposes, someone had to die. Who else to kill but the husband of Jessica Buchanan, father to 1 child and another one in the way which he found out about on his death bed. Nash and Jessica went through so much drama starting with Jessica’s inherited multiple personality disorder from her mother Viki Lord. Jessica used to be married to Antonio Vega. Jessica had to painfully admit after their honeymoon that she and her Tess alter integrated which is why she fell in love with Nash too. But of course they killed Nash off. Nothing is ever happily ever after in Soap Operas. That thing only happens in Angelina Jolie’s life (hehe). Jessica had to face losing her husband hours after she found out she was pregnant with their second child. Albeit I hated that Nash died I understood that that’s how life goes. And that’s how soaps story had to go. It created dramas and it certainly brought out a lot of that on the show and in Bree Williamson’s ability as an actress. She just earned a pre-nomination for the 36th Emmy’s.
Second, The Marty comeback storyline. It turned out Marty is alive and didn’t die from the car explosion like everyone was led to believe. She suffered an amnesia though which made it easy for Ramsey to hold her captive. Ramsey’s involvement with the whole story got complicated so they got rid of him which paved way for another dark storyline involving Todd Manning. Carlivati found a way to recycle the rape storyline which made the Todd and Marty tandem a major part of Daytime Soaps history. This time around the word rape had to be revisited. Was it rape when Todd and Marty had sex considering the fact that it was actually amnesiac Marty who wanted to make love to Todd? Todd took advantage of Mary’s situation by re-writing Marty’s memories. Todd became the innocent one while the people who loves Marty were the bad guys.
Third, The Baby Switch. To make things even more complicated, Carlivati decided to go to the baby switch route between Starr and Jessica. While Jessica was walking around town as Tess who is pretending to be Jessica and was actually trying to kill her twin sister Natalie and her boyfriend because she blames them for Nash’s death, the baby switch became apparently obvious to OLTL loyal fans. We are too smart for our good, and I’m guessing much to the writer’s chagrined. We also met another one of Jessica’s alters, named Bess. If Tess is Jessica bad side, Bess is the meticulous and even more dangerous alter. Knowing Todd’s plan on kidnapping Starr’s baby through Tess, when Jessica’s second baby ended up being stillborn, Bess drove herself to the hospital after labor (I still want to know how she did that, OUCH) and switched Jessica’s dead baby for Starr’s healthy baby. The little girl living at Viki’s house whom Jessica calls Chloe is actually Starr’s baby. Dr. Joplin, Starr’s Doctor thought she missed something so simple with Cole and Starr’s blood types which could have prevented the baby’s death. She felt so guilty she took a gun and killed herself.
Fourth, The Teen-Drug Story. Cole lost a child, found out his Mother is alive but she can’t remember him, let alone spend time with him. Where else is he going to turn to? Drugs of course. What, you expected him to post naked pictures of himself and Starr on MySapce or Facebook? Of course not. He did something stupider than that. He got into his car after finding his girlfriend locking lips with their Science Teacher. Coked out of his mind, he drove himself and Matthew into a major car accident which almost killed 4 people. Himself, Matthew, Shane, and Gigi. The scene today (March 11) when Nora found out the reason Matthew might not be able to walk ever is because Cole was driving the car doped out of mind. She thought it was an accident until Marty told her. Cole’s guilt is unbelievable. The poor kid almost killed 4 people. Now he is the cause of Matthew being possibly paralyzed. Like Nora pointed out, Matthew treated him like a big brother. Matthew took the blame for his drug problems. Nora treated him like her own son while his own mother refused to act like one. The pain from Nora, Marty, and Cole were just too hard to handle. Susan Haskell and Brandon Buddy deserves their own pre-nominations too.
Each of these storylines are wonderfully written and well acted by the actors. But Oh My Gosh, my heart can’t take it anymore. They’re all too deep and dark. After all these I don’t know if I’m ready to find out any more of what Carlivati’s head has come up with in the future. Can it get any worse? Is there going to be a happy day for any of these characters?
I don’t know about you but I felt like reaching out for the phone to call Dr. Phil or Oprah to help me deal with the heartbreaking scene involving Nora, Marty, and Cole today. If I have a bottle of Prozac available I would’ve down 1 or 2 pills earlier. Whewww!
