Corine had the opportunity to do a video interview with Kelly Bishop (Emily on Gilmore Girls) recently. It’s a really nice long interview, with information about a new play Kelly is a part of, Becky Shaw, so take a look:
Kelly talks about ballet being her introduction into theatrics. After studying ballet for many many years, and taking her first job in ballet, she took off her pointe shoes and took a jazz class. Which lead to Broadway! Kelly Bishop was on Broadway for many years, and won a 1976 Tony Award as “Best Supportin or Featured Actress (Musical) for her work in ‘A Chorus Line‘.
Kelly shares her experience on Dirty Dancing, and how she was originally cast to be Vivian Pressman, the highly sexed resort guest! Instead she ended up as the mom of Frances “Baby” Houseman. This was a bigger part for her, so she took it!
Becky Shaw is Kelly Bishop’s new play, just starting rehearsals at Second Stage in New York. In this new play, Kelly Bishop plays a woman with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), but she wouldn’t share much more. The play will have a limited run: December 16 – February 1, 2009.
This is the second season for Becky Shaw, but the first season in New York. In the play, a newlywed couple fix up two romantically challenged friends. When the path to happiness goes astray, we must ask what we owe to the people we love as well as to the strangers who land in our way. It has been reviewed as quite a witty play.
From looking at reviews of the first run of the show, Kelly Bishop has been cast as Susan in Becky Shaw, a woman with MS who hooks up with a man much younger than herself, and quite disreputable. We can expect to also play into the dysfunctional relationship Susan has with her daughter Suzanna in the play.
