Interview: White Rabbits chat about New York, Spoon and The Pogues

The White Rabbits are rippin it up right now. Their move from Missouri to lavish conditions in New York has proved to be paying off in spades.

Their song, The Plot has almost 64,000 listens on their MySpace page, they’ve got somevery cool gig across the country coming up (including shows with Tokyo Police Club, The French Kicks and The Pogues), and they have a basketball net in their apartment. What else could a band ask for?

Big Apple Music Scene caught up with one of our favorite bands White Rabbits for short interview. The interview was the same day the Kaiser Chiefs canceled their tour.

Here it is…

What is the scene like and what is your favorite venue to play back in Missouri?

The scene is really eclectic but everyone’s really supportive and friendly. The guys in the bluegrass band are friends with the guys in the punk band. As for a favorite venue, Mojo’s has been really good to us.

A lot of musicians say that New York kicks their ass on their first go around, but the second time is a proper introduction to a great city.
How were your first few weeks in New York?

The worst part of it all was that the loft we moved into came fully equipped with a basketball hoop. Needless to say, this was a huge selling point for us. The games were fierce and fast-paced for the first few days, which made it easier for us to forget that we were all so broke. But the dream was squashed within the first week when the landlord and neighbors came a knockin’, telling us to keep the noise down or else. We were still pretty intimidated by New Yorkers so we kindly obliged. Net hasn’t been touched since. Heartbreaking, I know.

You’re about to go on a tour with the Kaiser Chief’s, how did that opportunity come about? Did you know them before the tour was announced?

Well as you may have just heard, they canceled that tour. And they were kind enough to call the whole thing off after we had already left New York to meet up with them in Dallas. And no, we didn’t have the pleasure of knowing them before the tour was announced.

What was the last great show you guys saw?

We played the monolith festival at red rocks a couple weeks ago. Spoon played a great set there, and watching them at such a beautiful venue was a thrill.

Now, I have to ask…you’re playing with the Pogues in San Fran on October 21st. I’m a huge Shane McGowan and Pogues fan and have seen them a few times…do you know what you’re in for? The man drinks like no other – who in the band is going to try to last with him?

That’s the first thing we said when we found out we were playing with them. Everyone in the band is a huge fan as well. We used to do a cover of “Old Main Drag” back in Missouri. I imagine all six of us will try to keep with the guy and I’m sure in the end he will show us who’s boss.
